Double whammy for South Staffs clubs at West Mids Regional League

Congratulations to Yendys NC and Barr Beacon NC U14 squads who qualified for National Clubs in the 2016/17 West Midlands Regional League!

Good luck to both clubs at the finals which will be taking place in May at Birmingham University.

Special Visit for Grasshoppers NC

Grasshoppers Netball Club had a very special visit at training this week, from England Netball’s very own Sasha Corbin! The club won the player appearance through England Netball’s Youth Camps.

Black Country School Games 2016

This year, the annual summer School Games were held on Friday 17th June at Walsall Campus Sports Centre. With 11 High 5 teams & 9 Year 7 teams we were set for a busy day of netball.
Both the High 5 and Year 7 netball competitions were played along side each other and the teams were spilt into two pools. After some exciting section matches, the scores were added up and the winner and runner up from each group battled for the 1st, 2nd and 3rd places in the semi-finals & final.

We also awarded two players as ‘Girl of the Game’ and ‘Man of the Match’ for their brilliant performance throughout the event. Girl of the Game was – Abi from Reedswood and Man of the Match was – George from Moat Farm

Goalden Globe Awards 2016

On Friday 17th June, Netball West Midlands hosted the annual Goalden Globe Awards, celebrating the West Midlands volunteers at Villa Park, Birmingham. In total there were 5 nominees from South Staffordshire represented, and much to everyone’s surprise two very excited winners on the night!

And the winners are….

Libra Lea Netball Club, Outstanding club of the Year

Both Regional winners will now go forward to represent the West Midlands at the National Awards.

Under 16's Net a Top 5 National Finish

On Friday 18th March the Under 16 Netball team travelled down to Brighton to take part in the biggest competition on the Netball calender; National School Finals. To reach this stage the girls have had to win 3 tournaments; Sandwell, South Staffordshire and West Midlands and had remained unbeaten over 25 matches! The preparation for these finals saw four weeks of intense training; including fitness, strength and conditioning and tactical team sessions.

The event took place in the remarkable grounds of Roedean Boarding School in Brighton, overlooking the sea. George Salter got off to a flying start against the reigning National Champions; Aylesbury, winning 10-9 in the dying minutes of the game. Their fine form continued into the next three games with victories over St.Albans, Yarm and South Hunsley. Their fourth game was against Kings Edwards, Bath who came out fighting from the very first whistle. The George's girls had takent their foot off the pedal slightly and struggled to regain momentum losing 11- 7. The girls then went up against West Bridgeford and managed to scrape a win with an outstanding defensive performance from Grace Porter-Deleon keeping them in the game. Wirral were the next opponents, they were a very physical team who were one of the favourites to go on and win the tournament. George's put together a good performance but couldn't quite capitalise on their opportunities and ended up losing 11-6.

The team finished in 3rd place in their group narrowly missing out on the semi finals, where the Grammer School at Leeds went on to be crowned as over all National Champions. Overall the George's girls did exceptionally well and finished as the 5th best school in the Country at their age group and the best non grammer school!

Thankyou to all the support from the parents and staff who made this great opportunity possible.

George Salter Academy - West Midlands Schools U16 Champions 2016

On Sunday, George Salter’s Under 16 Netball team took part in the West Midlands Regional Schools tournament which was held at Bromsgrove School. The competition involves the best 19 qualifying schools from across the region with teams battling out for two places in the National Schools finals. George Salter went into the tournament as one of the favourites after building a great reputation for Netball in the region and qualifying the last two years to National finals; but never as winners, always runners-up.

This year the girls had set their goal of winning the tournament and worked tirelessly in the weeks running up to the event to ensure their fitness, set plays and various combinations were all finely tuned for the big day.

George Salter got off to an excellent start with a 15 – 2 victory over John Fisher and made their intentions of producing fast but safe transitions through the court very evident. The second game saw a very tall opposition in Kings Worcester; however this resulted in smart play by our girls not using any high balls and subsequently winning 11-1. Next up was Tudor Grange who, like George Salter, has many Regional Academy players so it was set to be a tight encounter. However through excellent leadership from captain Grace Porter-Deleon and outstanding shooting from Nasara Arnett and Tumba Katanda the game finished with a 14 – 6 win. The next few games against King Edwards Bham, Hereford and Church Stretton were again convincing wins with the George’s girls turning over some excellent defensive interceptions and causing a lot of issues for the opposing teams.

Early Christmas present for Regional umpire Chris Molloy

Chris of South Staffordshire has been selected to join the umpire officials for this forthcoming season of the Superleague competition. Chris is now the second official to be selected from West Midlands and will be along side International umpire Ian Fuller. We congratulate Chris on his achievement and wish him every success!
