On April 2nd Grasshoppers players took on a 100 Shot Challenge to raise money for The Netball Development Trust. Everyone had been asking friends and family to guess how many shots would be scored ... Raising a whopping £570! Head Coach Lex is now out in Ghana working with NDT and it is hoped that the monies raised will support a future project to bring our favourite sport to girls and women in developing countries. |
Established in 1958/59 initially as a youth league and then extending to include corporate teams, the Walsall and District Netball league is celebrating its diamond jubilee this year, its 60th anniversary! The league has gone from strength to strength as every season passes, seeing more teams entering, and offers competitive netball in the area to women and girls of all ability levels. At present the league has 38 teams in 5 divisions in the midweek league and 31 teams playing in 4 divisions in the Saturday league.
The league was named the ‘Walsall and District Netball League’ as they have teams entering each season from all around the West Midlands region. The league’s home for 28 years was at the Manor Netball Centre, Wednesbury and only moved to its new home, the newly refurbished Phoenix Collegiate West Bromwich at the start of the 2018/19 season. Over the years the league has also held fund raising events, formed the Brenda Bell memorial tournament, and supports the development of umpires for the county. Along with this the committee has battled to keep the league going with numerous facility hurdles to conquer. Without the dedication of its volunteers spanning across 60 years, netball in the area simply wouldn’t be as thriving as it is today.
